The Shamanic Journey
The Shamanic journey is one of the most important tasks to be
undertaken by a shaman, it is a technique used for experiencing inner space that lies beyond the normal
physical senses. On this journey, the physical body rests whilst the consciousness travels into the inner
dimensions. These visionary journeys are experienced through a shamanic state of consciousness which is not
hypnotic, for the shaman is in complete control. In this expanded state of awareness, which is like a waking
dream the shaman can access the other worlds, other dimensions.
As a preliminary to shamanic journeying, both the imagination and will
must be called into action. The will unaided can send forth a current, and that current cannot be wholly
operative. Its affect is vague and indefinite because the will unaided sends out nothing but the
force of the current.
The imagination unaided can create an image and this image must have
an existence of varying duration. It can do nothing of
importance unless visualised and directed by the will. When, however, the two
are amalgamated when the IMAGINATION creates an image and the WILL directs and uses that image, marvellous
results may be obtained.
In some shamanic traditions have the belief of the Cosmos on four
principal planes? The physical reality is the Middle World. It is the realm of the material and physical.
Beneath the surface of the middle World is the realm of the subconscious or the Lower World The place of
empowerment. The Lower World overlaps into the realm of unconscious activity which is referred to as the
Under-world or place of potentials. Above the Middle World is a realm of higher consciousness which is called
the Upper World. A place of inspiration and creativity.
